Waldeyer’s Ring

Definition: Subepithelial lymphoid tissue scattered throughout the pharynx, which aggregates at specific places to form a protective ring.

Components of the Ring

The ring is composed of the following masses:

  1. Nasopharyngeal Tonsil: Also known as the Adenoids.
  2. Palatine Tonsils: Commonly referred to as simply "The Tonsils" (Faucial).
  3. Lingual Tonsil: Located at the base of the tongue.
  4. Tubal Tonsils: Situated in the Fossa of Rosenmüller (Gerlach's tonsil).
  5. Lateral Pharyngeal Bands: Vertical bands of lymphoid tissue behind the posterior pillars.
  6. Nodules: Scattered on the posterior pharyngeal wall.
