Definition: A stone formed within the tonsil due to blockage of crypts in chronic tonsillitis.

Pathogenesis

Chronic Tonsillitis (Blocked Crypt)
Retention of Debris
Deposition of Inorganic Salts (Calcium & Magnesium)
Formation of Stone

Note: It may gradually enlarge and ulcerate through the tonsil.

Clinical Features & Diagnosis

  • Demographics: Seen more often in adults.
  • Symptoms:
    • Local discomfort.
    • Foreign body sensation.
  • Diagnosis:
    • Easily diagnosed by Palpation.
    • Gritty feeling on probing.

Treatment

Method Indication
Simple Removal For superficial/accessible stones.
Tonsillectomy 1. Associated sepsis.
2. Deeply set stone (cannot be removed simply).
