Styalgia (Eagle Syndrome)

Definition: Pain condition due to an elongated styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament.

Anatomy & Aetiology

Normal Styloid Length ~ 25 mm
Elongated Styloid > 30 mm

Clinical Features

  • Pain Location: Tonsillar fossa and upper neck.
  • Radiation: Radiates to the ipsilateral ear.
  • Aggravating Factor: Pain worsens on swallowing.
  • Note: Many people have an elongated styloid process but remain asymptomatic.

Diagnosis

1. Clinical

Transoral Palpation: The styloid process can be felt in the tonsillar fossa.

2. Imaging

  • X-Ray:
    • Anteroposterior view (open mouth).
    • Lateral view of skull.
  • CT Scan: With 3D reconstruction (Excellent visualization).

Treatment

  • Asymptomatic: No treatment needed.
  • Symptomatic: Surgical Excision of the styloid process.
